Basketball club "Cherkasy Mavpy" (Ukrainian basketball club "Cherkasy Mavpi") is a Ukrainian men's basketball club from the city of Cherkassy, playing in the Ukrainian Super League.
Story
The club was founded in 2003 under the name "Ryativnik-Cherkasy" (Ryativnik-Cherkasy, translated as Rescuer-Cherkasy). In 2004 it was renamed into "Cherkassk Mavpy" (Cherkasy Mavpi, Cherkassk Monkey).
The club started the 2004/2005 season successfully. The tournament distance in the Major League "Cherkassy Mavpy" passed exactly, having received a ticket to the Super League.
In the 2006/2007 season, Cherkasy Mavpy made their debut in the European Challenge Cup. Having successfully passed the group stage, the "Monkeys" reached the quarterfinals, where they lost to their fellow countrymen from "Dnipro" in a tense struggle. In the championship and Cup of Ukraine the team took fourth place. In the 2007 NBA draft, the club's player Kirill Fesenko was selected 38th Philadelphia-76
In the 2007/2008 season in the regular season, the club finished only seventh, dropped out of the Ukrainian Cup after the quarterfinals, and after qualifying in the FIBA Challenge Cup, it was eliminated after the first group round. The reasons for the failure were a series of injuries and an unsuccessful selection policy, in connection with which more than ten players were changed in the team.
Season 2008/2009 "Cherkasy Mavpy" started with the strongest line-up in the history of the team. In the summer, Balkan legionaries of a very high level appeared in the team, and the Monkeys approached the championship of the new Ukrainian Basketball League completely ready to fight. The first 2 rounds of the championship were held with the dominance of "Cherkasy Mavps", however, completely failing the end of the season, the team took only 9th place. Among the reasons for the failure were the lack of team play and an unfavorable microclimate in the team. The star performers stopped finding common ground, and as a result, the team failed the season.
Before the start of the 2009/2010 season, the team's leadership set a course for a reset and Ukrainization. This season, the club started playing in the Major League. The team's management set the task to get the gold of the second most important Ukrainian championship and return the registration in the Super League. The team of Vladimir Kholopov easily became the champion of the Higher League, having written their name in the history of Ukrainian basketball, as a team that won the championship without a single defeat. But despite this, for various reasons, "Cherkasy Mavps" become members of the Super League only after a season, having spent another one in the Major League and won it again.
The main task in the 2011/2012 season for the team of Vladimir Kholopov was to gain a foothold in the elite of Ukrainian basketball. Cherkasy Mavpy started assembling the overcrowded Budivelnik sports complex, which can accommodate over a thousand fans. It was during this season that one of the brightest basketball players in the entire history of Ukrainian basketball, Will Solomon, came to Cherkassy, but despite this, the team was unable to reach the playoffs. This was also hindered by the large number of injuries that key players of the team received during the championship.
In fact, immediately after the end of the season, the club's management announces ambitious plans for the next season and returns to the helm of the team of Serbian specialist - Jovic Arsic. Also, one of the priorities in the new season will be to attract pupils of the basketball school "Cherkasy Mavpy" to the main team.
In the 2012/2013 season, the leaders of Cherkassians - Charles Tomas and Tomas Delininkaitis showed their best game. The club reached the playoffs, having won almost all the last matches of the regular season, but lost to Ferro-ZNTU with a score of 1: 4 in the quarterfinal series. After that, Arsich left the team, and the owners of the club decided to give a second chance to Vladimir Kholopov.
In the 2013/2014 season, Svyatoslav Mikhailyuk, Alexander Kobets, Nikita Ruslov and Nikita Voevoda joined the ranks of the team. The team had a difficult start in the Super League and due to unsatisfactory results Kholopov stopped working with the club. Maxim Mikhelson was appointed as the new coach, who has achieved significant results over the years of working with the club's youth teams. During the presentation of the mentor to the team, the president of the club, Sergei Odarych, set the maximum task - reaching the playoffs of the Super League, and also expressed hope for the club's pupils this season. With the arrival of the coach, who is associated with the loudest successes in youth basketball of Cherkassians, a stake was made on their pupils. And simultaneously, due to the events in the country, the legionnaires began to leave Ukraine. The championship was finished in 11th place by the promising youth headed by the captain Andrey Kalnichenko.
The 2014/2015 season in Ukraine was marked by a “chance for youth”. Due to the situation in the country, the number of legionnaires in the domestic championship has dropped significantly. The Cherkasy youth, led by the pupil of the club, Alexander Kobets, has proven themselves excellently. However, in sports terms, the team stopped one step away from the desired result.
